Hall Davidson
Keynote Speaker

Hall Davidson Director: Discovery Educator Network

Hall taught middle and high school English, mathematics, Spanish, and bilingual mathematics. He left the classroom to teach math on television in Los Angeles on an Emmy-winning program and spent 20 years at PBS stations teaching and leading staff developments in person and on-air. While producing television series on education and technology, he led a media consortium serving 17 districts and 200,000 students. He frequently contributes articles to national educational publications. With a team he founded Kitzu.org, a resource of free online kits to encourage project-based learning with media. He served on the board of Computer-Using Educators for six years and consulted for media corporations and professional organizations. For a dozen years he coordinated the nation’s oldest student media festival, the California Student Media. He joined Discovery Education in 2005 where he blogs, creates webinars, and works in educational partnerships as a director of the Discovery Educator Network, connecting thousands of teachers nationwide. This presentation will discuss how technology, the learner and the world have changed, creating a sense of urgency for education to change and adapt. This presentation will discuss the learning trends and research that indicate a need for change.

Building Innovative Learning Environments for the 21st Century. Once one understands the challenges to education caused by the changes around us: changing technology, changing learner, and the changing world, the question arises as to how do I create a meaningful 21st century learning environment? Stephanie Hamilton will share her experiences from 31 years in US education and 8 years at Apple. Inc, supporting international education examining the lessons learned in creating innovative learning environments.

Tammy Worcester

Tammy WorcesterDistinguished Educator, Author, and Presenter

Tammy Worcester has nearly twenty-five years of educational experience. She began her career in the classroom, teaching various grades from kindergarten to middle school. While teaching, Tammy also served as the technology coordinator for her K-8 school.

For the past twelve years, Tammy has worked for ESSDACK, an educational service center, as an Instructional Technology Specialist, providing staff development and training in the area of technology integration.

Her website, “Tammy’s Technology Tips for Teachers” (www.tammyworcester.com) is a popular online resource for teachers around the world. Tammy has developed several software applications for teachers and is the author of several best-selling technology resource books that are published and marketed nationally.

Tammy is extremely innovative and resourceful and specializes in finding unique and creative ways to use traditional computer tools in the classroom. She enjoys sharing her ideas with teachers throughout the nation and has a presentation style that can be described as inspiring.

Tammy’s experiences as a parent, a teacher, a technology director, and a training specialist have allowed her to develop a strong sense of best educational practices. Those skills, coupled with her technology expertise, enable her to collaborate with other educators to build models of effective technology implementation that will have the potential to truly transform schools.


Corinne Hoisington

Corinne HoisingtonCorinne Hoisington is a full-time Professor of Information Systems Technology at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, VA with over 20+ years of teaching experience. Corinne also travels over 150,000 miles a year speaking to college & university professors and K12 venues in over 50 cities this year for such customers as the Microsoft Corporation, Cengage Learning, and many other universities and businesses. Professor Hoisington is the 2004 recipient of the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional in Computer Programming. She also serves on the editorial board for the International Merlot Online Project in education. Corinne recently authored a book with Gary Shelly titled Visual Basic 2008 and also authored the video projects "The Guided Tour of Office 2007" , "The Guided Tour of Vista", and "The Guided Tour of Expression Web".
Her newest project just came out in the Spring of 2009 called "The Guided Tour of Hot Technologies".


Dave Edyburn

Dave EdyburnDave L. Edyburn, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Exceptional Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dr. Edyburn’s teaching and research interests focus on the use of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and performance. He has authored over 150 articles and book chapters on the use of technology in special education. He is President-elect of the Special Education Technology Special Interest Group (SETSIG) in the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) as well as a past president of the Technology and Media (TAM) Division of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Justin Karkow

Justin Karkow

Justin Karkow began his educational career as a first grade teacher in Raleigh, North Carolina. An adventurer to the core, Justin begged, borrowed and scraped together enough resources for each of his students to be able to benefit from technology on a daily basis. He then assumed the role of an instructional technology facilitator in Wake County, NC where he modeled effective use of technology to teachers and students. Before joining Discovery, Justin traveled the country presenting to thousands of teachers on how to integrate technology into the classroom for the SAS Institute. Justin joined Discovery in 2008 as a Field Manager and now serves as the Discovery Educator Network Account Manager for the Central Region.

Justin has presented at NECC, MEC, and the DEN National and Regional Institutes. He has also provided professional development on technology integration. Justin currently lives in Charlotte, NC area with his wife Pam and sons Jonah and Carson.

Textbooks, the Students Who Can't Read Them, and What To Do About It - Thursday 11:30
Whereas, learning to read is the predominant focus of instruction in grades 1-3, grade 4 and beyond focuses on reading to learn. However, what happens when a child with a disability cannot read at grade level? This session will provide tools, resources, and strategies for making text accessible for students who do not read at grade level.

Many students struggle with the range of tasks associated with research and report writing. This session will outline the student research process and illustrate how an array of tools can be implemented as assistive technology for an individual student or universal design for learning to benefit all students.

No Child Left Behind has helped educators understand that there are struggling students in every classroom. The purpose of this session is to discuss and demonstrate the concept of a technology toolkit (e.g., web tools and free software products) and to highlight selected tools that should be available in every classroom to support the academic performance of struggling students.
